Indoor/ Outdoor Fabrics

Outdoor fabrics in navy and white

There are many new exciting indoor/ outdoor fabrics on the market for Spring Summer 2012.  The colors are fairly neutral with an emphasis on pattern and trimmings.  All of the fabrics are stain repellent as well as anti-fade.  Because of their stain repellent nature (yes even red wine will bead up on the new Schumacher outdoor fabrics), they are sometimes a good selection for a family room or dining chairs.

Using Art in Interior Design

0
Dass with ChairOne way to add warmth to an interior is by using original art alongside furnishings.  Most commonly this is in the form of paintings or photography, but sculpture and textiles are also a useful way to convey ‘life’ in a room.  Depending on the selection of art and the juxtaposition within the space, many times a ‘boring’ room can achieve sophistication and style with the use of carefully chosen pieces.  At Stedman House, we encourage clients to ‘buy what they love’ in the form of art.  But we are also able to suggest pieces that will accent the clients’ spaces.  Interior Designers are able to use art to tie the colors and theme of a room together.  A beloved painting has been the source of inspiration when designing a scheme for a room.  When a piece of original art is used in an interior, it expresses the client’s individuality.  Because most original art is ‘one of a kind’ a true unique atmosphere is created in a home.

Art can also be a way to bring some of the outdoors inside a home.  Paintings featuring landscapes and nature are extremely popular given their attractiveness and usability.  Particularly if there isn’t a window with a view in a room, then a painting can give a glimpse of the colors of nature in an interior.

One of the most important things to remember about incorporating artwork into your home is to ‘not hang the pieces too high’.  A good rule of thumb is to hang the center of the picture at eye level for a normal person, or about 58″-60″ above the floor.

Even everyday items like prints or photos can be framed and hung in an artistic way.  Pay important attention to the quality of the frames selected.  A series of pictures should be hung close together so that the viewer knows that they are a group.
